Peter Weibel   1944 - 2023

Peter Weibel, Chair of ZKM, passed away March, 2023 at 78 years old. Those who were privileged to work with Peter remember both his legacy as the pioneer of European media art as well as a good friend.  Peter was indeed a friend of ICIE. He both hosted ICIE and acted as the spiritus rector of the ICIE 2004 symposium at ZKM. As chair of ZKM (Centre for Art and Media, Karlsruhe) Peter hosted ICIE from its inception in 2000 to 2018 before the Center was transferred to the University of Alberta in 2018.

 

During an exhibition at ZKM, Weibel introduced Rafael Capurro, Chair of ICIE, to the Director General of Volkswagen Foundation. Following the introduction, Volkswagen sponsored the international ZKM ICIE 2004 Symposium which dealt with intercultural issues of Information Ethics at which some fifty colleagues were invited to participate.

The legacy that is Peter Weibel plays a founding and continuing role in the mission of ICIE, and will be recalled for years to come.
